If I had to name my ideal bowl of something, during the winter I would describe it as “some kind grain, smothered in tomato sauce.” It could be a stew of pearl couscous and vegetables. It could be a lamb ragu. It could be mole rojo with chicken and rice. But it will probably be a simple bowl of pasta. It was a weekday, and I needed comfort food that demanded no effort. So it was good that I had penne pasta, a can of Prego “Chunky Garden Combo” sauce, hard-boiled eggs, and a jar of pickles. It was every bit as delicious as I wanted it to be.

The pickles were from Safeway and called “Bread and Butter Slicers.” They were indeed shaped like slices of butter, giving me the odd sensation that I was eating dill-flavored butter but the dill had mistakenly been replaced with pickles.
