The other good place to have lunch by my office is Julia’s Empanadas. Ever since I’ve lived in DC, it’s always been there and it’s never changed. It’s smaller than a convenience store (there are several locations) and they offer around five or six savory empanadas: usually turkey, chorizo, vegetarian, chicken, spinach, and beef, with some dessert empanadas as well. It’s like a food truck before there were food trucks, without the long lines or the sense of obligation to follow them on Twitter. These empanadas are not the smaller pastries you might find served as appetizers elsewhere; they’re sandwich-sized and give you more than enough to eat. Like Ethiopian restaurants, it’s always been part of the background as an option for eating out in DC, but visitors are often surprised and pleased that we have someplace like this available.
