I usually have spicy food when I don’t have time to prepare anything complicated and I’m going to lean on a condiment to complete a meal. One example is my very hot mustard. I bought it accidentally without noticing the tiny label in a corner of the bottle that says “hot,” which seems like a questionable marketing strategy for selling the mustard no one wants. I would not recommend it as mustard, but I do find it a useful vehicle for covering up food you don’t like. When it comes to pre-made sauces that can stand in for a main dish, there are other options. Some people are willing to be advocates for smothering mayonnaise over a ham sandwich for lunch, but mayonnaise and deli meats both leave me cold. Today I poured vinaigrette and the contents of a package of garlic-flavored crispy onions over romaine lettuce, a combination that’s enough to break lips apart.
