I pulled some thai basil from the garden, fresh from the rain, and put it on beef patties, and then I decided to stay up late and watch balloons drop on political candidates. These days, a convention seems like an anachronism; do they really want to stand there in the audience and listen to one prepared speech after another? Don’t these people have telephones to attend to? But I watch portions of the conventions every four years, and I remember them as a way of putting a marker on the era. The important decisions that affect our lives usually take place in secluded locations or at midnight in the Capitol, and this is one of the rare occasions when you can watch political history happen in real time.
