My garden is a mess, with its vines overturned and unrelated vegetables interweaving haphazardly. But it is a productive mess, giving me a daily supply of tomatoes, a little eggplant, and an upcoming crop of winter squash. I have my pick of herbs as well, except the basil is just about over: Its leaves have turned yellow, and I suppose this must be a reaction to the shorter days because there hasn’t been any cold yet. I made a breakfast of eggs, sweet peppers, tomatoes, and jalapeños.

We went to a friend’s housewarming in Alexandria, in a new housing development next to the train track between Crystal City and Old Town. Somebody brought a key lime cheesecake, which was every bit as good as it sounds.
