Thanksgiving was in a big house in the woods in western Massachusetts, where the trees were grey and there was snow on the ground. While we waited for dinner we passed the time with my two-year-old nephew, who made up a game of laying out cups and plates on the stairway and informing us that we were going on an airplane ride, and once the airplane landed we’d be going on a picnic. For our real picnic, we had stuffed squash as a vegetarian dish to complement the turkey, and sweet potatoes and stuffing, and a relish of raw cranberries to go with the traditional cranberry sauce. There were pumpkin, pecan, and apple pies: In the last of the three, the apples were left unpeeled so that the apple skins looked like cursive writing curling through the pie crust.
