An apple muffin at Panera, as I occupied myself with a full day of shopping for presents and groceries. The traffic in our neighborhood was such that there were lines of cars waiting to get out to the freeway, lines to get home from work, lines to get home from the mall. We walked through all this later in the evening, skirting the cars that kept trying to weave into each others’ lanes without moving forward, and had dinner at Bar Louie, which is a bit like TGI Friday’s with better food. You could scoff at a bar that’s next to a movie theater and looks out on giant mall parking lot, but the truth is that diverse groups of people could be found there and they kept the lights down to a pleasant ambiance, and it wasn’t really distinguishable from some other place with more urban pretensions.
