December 25

This is first time we’ve stayed in D.C. for Christmas, which I suppose means our home here is finally complete. It’s been a tradition in my family to make Pillsbury cinnamon rolls with orange icing for breakfast, and after that we went to see the Rogue One Star Wars movie, though I skipped the first 15 minutes of backstory to wait in line to buy popcorn. The first course for dinner was kale with raisins and sherry vinegar, and the second was butternut squash with tahini sauce; I know how to make these, and they tasted perfect. For a main course we had a pheasant, which I wrapped in bacon and cooked with apples simmering in cognac. I got Viet a relatively expensive bottle of Napa Cabernet as a present, but at first the level of tannins was hard to get used to; with the vegetables it was too much, with the poultry it was just what we wanted.
